Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav: A Grand Fusion of Culture and Commerce in Northeast India

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is going to inaugurate Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav today 6th December 2024 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. This festival is to celebrate the eight North-Eastern states of India: Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sikkim collectively known as “Ashtalakshmi” representing the eight forms of prosperity. 

About Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav

A three-day event, from December 6th to 8th, 2024, will take place at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. PM Modi will inaugurate it today, December 6th. This event will represent everything from culture to commerce, from fashion to tech sessions. 

Key Highlights: 

  • Vibrant textile industry: the future of the handloom sector of the state will be boosted by showcasing the traditional and sustainable textiles of the state. The two types of silk are going to be presented in the event: Muga and Eri. Muga silk is a part of Assamese pride and culture having GI tag and the Eri silk is produced in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram and is popular due to its sustainability.

  • Fashion show: It will highlight the blend of traditional textile with modern fashion showcasing Muga silk gowns and Eri silk stoles. Designers will collaborate with local artisans to create amazing outfits. 

  • Technical sessions: From buyer and seller meetings to investment round table, it is going to gain more investments and new projects. It will promote long-term business relationships between Northeast India’s artisans and its buyers and investors opportunities in tourism, agriculture, handicrafts, etc.

  • Cultural performances: Ashtalakshmi Symphony, Shillong Chamber Choir, traditional dances.

  • Mascot: The event presented Purvi, the mascot of Mahalakshmi Mahotsav. Purvi is a young girl representing the eight states of Northeast India. She symbolizes the region's rich heritage, culture unity, and diversity.

Investment areas in Northeast India:

  • Infrastructure: Opportunities for investment in roads, rail networks, and bridges. The North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) and the North East Industrial Development Scheme (NEIDS) have been initiated to attract investments in infrastructure.

  • Dhola- Sadiya Bridge (Bhupen Hazarika Setu)

  • Bogibeel bridge

  • Saraighat Bridge

Airports:

  • Pakyong Airport (Sikkim) 

  • Hollongi Airport (Arunachal Pradesh) 

GI tags 

  • Smart city mission: Guwahati, Agartala, and Shillong are part of India’s Smart Cities Mission
