Tourism in the Himalayas is not uniform; its impacts though are detrimental

• Over the last year, the Union government has laid emphasis on promoting sustainable tourism in the Himalayan region.
• The Indian Himalayan region, with its rich biodiversity, offers conditions suitable for several activities (recreation/adventure/religious pilgrimages) and attracts a large number of visitors from all over the world.
• As tourism is an important source of income and livelihood for people living in this region, it must be ensured that these activities take place in a sustainable manner.

Recent efforts by Government

National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism

• Launched in 2022 by the Union Ministry of Tourism
• Strategic pillars for development of sustainable tourism:
• Promoting Environmental Sustainability,
• Protecting Biodiversity,
• Promoting Economic Sustainability,
• Promoting Socio-Cultural Sustainability,
• Scheme for Certification of Sustainable Tourism,
• IEC and Capacity Building and Governance.

Swadesh Darshan 2.0

• The idea of Swadesh Darshan 2.0 is to undertake holistic development with the vision to develop Sustainable and Responsible Tourist Destinations.
• The Scheme will encourage adoption of principles of sustainable tourism including environmental, socio-cultural and economic sustainability.

Challenges faced

• Each year, millions of tourists visit Himalayas.
• Sensitive to outside influences, the Himalayan environment of mountain areas has been abruptly exposed to it.
• The authorities of the Himalayan countries try to conserve them and currently, there are 126 areas under protection.
• These include the state of the natural environment within protected areas and the trends in the changes (degradation, pollution, natural hazards), the impact of tourism on local communities, management, etc.
• More generation of solid waste, ambient air pollution, water pollution and deforestation.
• Shift is seen in snowfall and melting patterns due to climate change-related impacts.

• Reduce mass tourism
• Developing tourist systems in northeastern states
• Promoting ecotourism or green tourism.
• Decentralisation of tourism activities
