Recently, the President of India, Draupadi Murmu conferred the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 to awardees in different categories. The event was hosted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi on January 11, 2024. The award was conferred to 13 awardees in five categories i.e. Clean Cities, Cleanest Cantonment, SafaiMitra Suraksha, Ganga Towns, and Best Performing State. The title of the cleanest city was bagged by Surat alongside, Indore, which conquered the top spot alone for 6 consecutive years. The Swachh Survekshan is an annual award, which is organized by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) under the Swachh Bharat Urban Mission since 2016.
This Survekshan (survey) stands as the world's largest survey on urban sanitation and cleanliness.
It is a competitive platform for towns and cities, aims to enhance cleanliness and waste management services.
The theme for the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 is ' Waste to Wealth'. During the award ceremony of the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 at the Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi on January 11, 2024, the President Draupadi Murmu announced the theme of Swachh Survekshan 2024 i.e. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 is based on three components i.e Service Level Progress (SLP), Certification, and Citizen voice.
Service Level Progress (SLP): It is a data provided by ULBs & documents assessment, weighing 51% of total marks.
Certification: It is based on GFC Star rating, ODF+/ODF++/Water+, weighing 26% of total marks
Citizen Voice: It is based on 5 components i.e. Feedback, engagement, experience, Swachhta app, and Innovation, weighing 23% of total.
The Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 was awarded by the President of India in five different categories i.e.
1. Clean Cities,
2. Cleanest Cantonment,
3. SafaiMitra Suraksha,
4. Ganga Towns, and
5. Best Performing State
The Cleanest city title of Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 is given to Indore (Madhya Pradesh), which conquered the top spot alone for 6 consecutive years and Surat (Gujarat).
While Sasvad (Maharashtra), Patan (Gujarat) and Lonavala (Maharashtra) secured the top three spots in the category of cities with a population of less than 1 lakh.
Mhow Cantonment Board, located in Madhya Pradesh was adjudged the Cleanest Cantonment Board.
Chandigarh won the award for the Best Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher in Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023.
The title of Cleanest Ganga Towns was jointly given to Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) and Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh)
The title of Best Performing State in Swachh Survekshan Award 2023 was given to Maharashtra (first), Madhya Pradesh (second) and Chhattisgarh (third).
During the event, the Swachh Bharat Mission Anthem for 2024 'Naya Sankalp Hai, Naya Prakalp Hai' was also released in the voice of Playback singer, Kailash Kher.
Increased marks from 10% to 13% for segregated door to door collection.
Increased marks from 2% to 5% for zero waste event and moved to SLP
Increased marks from 2% to 10% for plastic waste management
Indicator added – NCC Cadets, NYKS, NSS to be engaged in cleanliness and maintenance of monuments and parks on Freedom Fighters
Introduced indicator on ‘Red Spots’ (spitting in commercial / residential areas) under cleaning of public areas
Increased marks from 10% to 18% for ‘Yellow Spots’ under Swachhata app Indicators.
Introduced Indicator on ’Waste to wonder’ park with 2% weightage
