The International Day of Democracy 2023 is observed annually on 15th September annually to promote and uphold the principles of democracy. The official theme for 2023, declared by the UN is Empowering the next generation. This day helps to understand the state of democracy in the world.
In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has passed a resolution to celebrate the International Day of Democracy on September 15.
The existence of this day, come after the Universal Declaration on Democracy, which was adopted by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on September 15, 1997.
Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is an organization of national parliaments.
Later, an Arab country, Qatar also promote the International Day of Democracy.
Finally, on November 8, 2007, the UNGA has passed a resolution titled 'Support by United Nations system of efforts of governments to promote and consolidate a new or restored democracies' and declared to observed 15th September as an International Democracy Day.
In 2023, the theme of International Day of Democracy is Empowering the next generation.
The theme for 2022 was 'Protecting Press Freedom for Democracy'.
The theme for 2021 was 'Strengthening democratic resilience in the face of future crises'.
