The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designates representative parts of natural and cultural landscapes extending over large areas of terrestrial or coastal/ marine ecosystems or a combination thereof as Biosphere Reserves. They are recognized to deal with one of the most important questions of reconciling biodiversity conservation, the quest for economic and social development, and the maintenance of associated cultural values. As of now, there are 18 Biosphere Reserves in the country. Here is the list of Biosphere Reserves of India.

The Biosphere Reserve Programme is guided by the UNESCO Man and Biosphere (MAB) programme.
India is a signatory to the landscape approach supported by the MAB programme.
A scheme called Biosphere Reserve has been implemented by the Government of India since 1986, in which financial assistance is given in a 90:10 ratio to the North Eastern Region States and three Himalayan states and the ratio of 60:40 to other states
Reason: For maintenance, improvement and development of certain items.
The State Government prepares the Management Action Plan approved and monitored by Central MAB Committee.

The functions of each biosphere reserve are as follows:
1. Conservation function: It aims to conserve species, ecosystems, genetic resources, and landscapes
2. Development function: It aims to promote sustainable human and economic development.
3. Logistic support function: Under this, the biosphere reserves aim to provide support for research and analyzing the issues of conservation and sustainable development.
The three zones of Biosphere reserves are the Core Area, Buffer Zone, and Transition Area.
