Human Development Index- Indian Scenario
India ranked 132nd among 191 countries and territories on the 2021 Human Development Index (HDI).
In the 2020 report, India had ranked 131st among 189 countries and territories.

Sri Lanka (73rd), China (79th), Bangladesh (129th), and Bhutan (127th) are ranked above India.
While Pakistan (161st), Nepal (143rd), and Myanmar (149th) are worse off.
Stanford University’s AI Index report states that India is ranked fifth in terms of investments received by startups offering AI-based products and services in 2022.
India is still behind the US, China, the UK, and Israel in terms of AI investments received.
AI startups in India received a total investment of $3.24 billion, surpassing countries such as South Korea, Germany, Canada, and Australia.

World Press Freedom Index 2023: India
India has slipped to the 161st position out of 180 countries in the 2023 World Press Freedom Index.
India is ranked worse than all other countries except for China, Mexico, Iran, Pakistan, Syria, Yemen, Ukraine, and Myanmar, with Myanmar having the lowest ranking.
Pakistan ranks ahead of India at 150.

India’s rank in the 7th edition of the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index 2023 has improved by 6 positions.
It now stands at 38th among 139 countries.

Ministry of Jal Shakti has released the first-ever Census of Water Bodies.
West Bengal has the highest number of water bodies in India, while Sikkim has the lowest.
Out of 24.24 lakh water bodies in the country, 97.1 percent or 23.55 lakh are in rural areas, and only 2.9 percent or 69,485 are in urban areas.
Ponds account for 59.5 percent of the water bodies, followed by tanks (15.7 percent), reservoirs (12.1 percent), water conservation schemes/percolation tanks/check dams (9.3 percent), lakes (0.9 percent), and others (2.5 percent).
Andhra Pradesh has the highest number of tanks, while Tamil Nadu has the highest number of lakes, as per the census.
Maharashtra is the leading state in implementing water conservation schemes, according to the census.
