World Hindi Day is observed annually on January 10, to raise awareness about Hindi, and acknowledge it as the language and its substantial impact. Hindi is one of the official languages of India, written in the Devanagari script. It is one of the 22 scheduled languages of the country. Hindi is also one of the most widely spoken languages across the world, along with Mandarin, Chinese, and English. For the first time, on 10th January 1949, Hindi was spoken in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Later, Hindi was declared the official language of the Union of India in 1950 and designated as Hindi in Devanagari script in Article 343 of the Constitution of India.
In 1975, the Indian government hosted the 'World Hindi Conference' in Nagpur to promote the Hindi language, across the world and 122 representatives from 30 nations attended the event.
On January 10, 2006, this day (World Hindi Day) marked for the first time on the instructions of the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The theme for World Hindi Day 2024 is “Hindi: From Traditional Knowledge to Artificial Intelligence.”
World Hindi Day is observed every year on 10th January annually to spread awareness about Indian language use and the issues with Hindi usage and promotion.
