• In her research, she demonstrated how and why gender differences in earnings and employment rates have changed, over a period of time.
• Over a 200-year period, female participation in the labor market did not have an upward trend but instead formed a U-shaped curve.
• The married women's participation decreased with the transition from an agrarian to an industrial society.

• This pattern suggested the result of structural change and evolving social norms regarding women’s responsibilities for home and family.
