1. Tata Motors unit signs MoU to set up 10,000 EV charging points

In the news:

• Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd (TPEM), a subsidiary of Tata Motors, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with leading charge point operators (CPOs) i.e. Chargezone, Glida, Statiq and Zeon.
• Aim: To roll out over 10,000 additional electric vehicles charging points within the next 12-15 months
• TPEM will actively assist the four CPOs in installing chargers at locations most frequented by its EV owners.
• It will also share insights on how the chargers are being used to help understand and enhance customer experience.
• Chargezone, Glida, Statiq, and Zeon are leading CPOs in India and  with a combined network of nearly 2,000 charging points across key cities.
• The robust charging ecosystem built by these operators forms the backbone upon which India’s transition to sustainable mobility is already happening.
• In addition to this, an open collaboration with BPCL aims to set up 7,000 chargers over 2024.

2. Renowned plastic surgeon Dr Atul Shah gets Game-Changing Innovator award at COP28

In the news:

• Renowned plastic surgeon Dr Atul Shah was felicitated with the 2023 REACH’s (Recognizing Excellence Around Champions of Health) Game Changing Innovator award at COP28 concluded in Dubai.
• Nearly 30 years ago, he realised a simple surgery without special equipment could tackle deformities in leprosy-affected patients.
• Later, he soon published an article about “one in four lasso’’ operative techniques in the European Journal of Hand Surgery.
• But it was the unavailability of adequate care to deal with smelly and poorly bandaged unhealed foot wounds that led him to design a self-care kit.
• This innovative solution has been integrated into India’s National Leprosy Eradication Programme since 2007 and benefited 80,000 people throughout the country.
• His efforts towards the welfare of leprosy-affected people were supported by then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and this model was soon followed by other states.
• About Leprosy:
  • It was caused by the bacteria mycobacterium leprae.
  • It primarily affects the peripheral nervous system causing skin lesions, numbness and other deformities.
  • During the Covid pandemic, there was a decline in case detection and as per the health ministry, approximately 75,000 new cases were detected in 2021-2022.
  • The decline in detecting new cases had also led to a rise in patients with grade 2 disabilities.

3. Bhajanlal Sharma named new Rajasthan Chief Minister

• The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Bhajanlal Sharma as the new Chief Minister of Rajasthan.

4. Bank of India launches savings account for women with independent income

In the news:

• Bank of India has launched Nari Shakti Savings Account (NSSA) designed for women aged 18 and above with an independent source of income.
• The NSSA includes a Personal Accident Insurance cover of up to Rs. 100 lakhs.
• Account holders can also avail discounted Health Insurance & Wellness products and enjoy rebates on locker facilities for Gold & Diamond savings accounts.
• Platinum account holders receive free facilities.
• Additionally, the account offers a concessional rate of interest on Retail Loans, a waiver of processing charges on Retail Loans, free issuance of Credit Cards, and a higher usage limit of up to Rs. 5.00 lakh on POS transactions.
• For each new Nari Shakti Account opened, the bank will contribute Rs. 10/- towards the CSR fund.
• This fund is earmarked for the socio-economic development of underprivileged women and the girl child.

5. Poland’s parliament elects Donald Tusk as prime minister

In the news:

• Former EU leader Donald Tusk has been elected as the Prime Minister of Poland.
• His leadership is expected to usher in a new-pro-European era, with promises to restore democratic standards and improve ties with European allies.
• The parliament rejected the proposed conservative government of acting Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, a widely expected outcome that paved the way for the rival alliance to form the next government.

• In addition to the Vyas Samman, the KK Birla Foundation has also instituted Saraswati Samman and Bihari Puraskar.

8. World's biggest opium producer

In the news:

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) released its Southeast Asia Opium Survey 2023, which stated that Myanmar is the world's biggest opium producer.

Besides, from 2022 to 2023, Myanmar saw an 18% increase to 1,16,000 acres in the amount of land used to grow the illicit crop and a 16% rise in production.

The growth can be attributed to multiple factors such as improved plot density, the use of irrigation and fertilisers.

Earlier Afghanistan held the infamous title but since the ascent of Taliban to power in 2021, cultivation of opium poppies has seen a decrease of 95%.

The report also highlighted that opium farming in Southeast Asia is closely linked to poverty, lack of government services, challenging macroeconomic environments, instability and insecurity.

9. Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence Summit

In the news:

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
• Aims: To bridge the gap between theory and practice on Artificial Intelligence by supporting cutting-edge research and applied activities on AI-related priorities
• Top Artificial Intelligence Gamechangers also participate in different events including Intel, Reliance Jio, Google, Meta, Paytm and Microsoft.
• India is the lead chair of GPAI in 2024.
• The Summit will provide an opportunity to know what the world is thinking on Artificial Intelligence and what India is offering.
• Initially, it was launched in June 2020 with 15 members, the GPAI’s membership has expanded to 28 member countries and the European Union.

10. Introduction of three new Criminal Bills

In the news:

• Government of India has introduced three new Criminal Bills incorporating the changes recommended by the Parliamentary Standing Committee.
• The three legislations namely are as follow:
  • Bharatiya Sakshya Bill -2023
  • Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill- 2023
  • Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Bill- 2023
• Aim: To replace the British-era laws were introduced in the Lok Sabha in August 2023
• These three bills are intended to replace the Indian Penal Code 1860, Criminal Procedure Act, 1898 and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872.

• ड्रग्स और अपराध पर संयुक्त राष्ट्र कार्यालय (यूएनओडीसी) ने अपना दक्षिणपूर्व एशिया ओपियम सर्वेक्षण 2023 जारी किया, जिसमें कहा गया कि म्यांमार दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा अफीम उत्पादक है।
• इसके अलावा, 2022 से 2023 तक, म्यांमार में अवैध फसल उगाने के लिए उपयोग की जाने वाली भूमि की मात्रा 18% बढ़कर 1,16,000 एकड़ हो गई और उत्पादन में 16% की वृद्धि देखी गई।

10. तीन नए आपराधिक विधेयकों का परिचय

• भारत सरकार ने संसदीय स्थायी समिति द्वारा अनुशंसित परिवर्तनों को शामिल करते हुए तीन नए आपराधिक विधेयक पेश किए हैं।

• उद्देश्य: ब्रिटिश काल के कानूनों को बदलने के लिए अगस्त 2023 में लोकसभा में पेश किया गया
• इन तीन विधेयकों का उद्देश्य भारतीय दंड संहिता 1860, आपराधिक प्रक्रिया अधिनियम, 1898 और भारतीय साक्ष्य अधिनियम, 1872 को प्रतिस्थापित करना है।
