5. Household debt doubles in FY23

In the news:

• As per the data by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the net financial household savings in FY23 have dropped to 5.1% of GDP from 7.2 percent in 2021-22 (FY22).
• Reason: Substantial increase in household liabilities
• The report also highlighted that the indebtedness also increased to Rs 15.6 lakh crore from FY21, due to massive borrowings from banks.
• As per the official data, the main reason for the decline in the net financial household savings in F23 was a substantial increase in household liabilities.
• It was 76% higher in 2022-23, as compared to the previous fiscal year (2021-22), with a notable 54 percent surge in borrowings from commercial banks.

6. Bharatanatyam exponent Saroja Vaidyanathan passes away

In the news:

• Recently, a veteran Bharatanatyam exponent Saroja Vaidyanathan passed away at 86, due to lymphoma in New Delhi.
• She was credited with starting the Bharatanatyam Academy, Ganesa Natyalaya, in New Delhi.
• In her 50-year-long career, she promoted a holistic learning approach to the art form of Bharatanatyam, and also taught Hindi, Tamil, and Carnatic music to students.
• She was conferred the Padma Shri in 2002 and the Padma Bhushan in 2013.
