The US-based organization, Freedom House has released a report titled 'Freedom on the Net 2023: The Repressive Power of Artificial Intelligence', which has highlighted that global Internet freedom has declined for the 13th consecutive year.

Key Points:

• The report also mentioned that the environment for human rights online has deteriorated in 29 countries.

• The organization has also raised a red flag on the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) by governments for censorship and the spread of disinformation.
• This report has assessed the position of internet freedom in 70 countries by a comprehensive methodology examining obstacles to access, limits on content, and violations of user rights.
• Many countries like Myanmar, the Philippines, and Costa Rica have drastically restricted online freedoms in 2023.
• For the ninth consecutive year, China has the lowest levels of internet freedom.
• In 55 countries, out of 70 countries, people faced legal action for online expression.
• And in 41 countries, people were assaulted or killed, when they express something online.
• Even, the organization has also observed through the report, that in the 41 countries, the websites displaying content protected by international human rights law were blocked.
• In 22 countries, including India, Vietnam, and Nigeria, local laws require digital platforms to remove content deemed unacceptable for religious, political, and social reasons.

2. Bangladesh receives Russian uranium for the Rooppur Nuclear power Plant

Bangladesh has officially received the first batch of uranium for its Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) from Russia.

• Once the Rooppur plant is commissioned, Bangladesh will become the 33rd nuclear power-producing country in the world.
• A Russian contractor, Rosatom has been engaged in establishing the 2400 MW Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant with two units.

8. NIIF unveils $600 mn India-Japan Fund

In the news:

• The National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) has joined hands with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to launch a $600 million India-Japan Fund (IJF).
• This collaboration between the two countries will help the countries to work together in the area of climate and environment.
• It marks NIIF’s first bilateral fund, with the 49% contribution of India and the remaining 51% contributed by JBIC.

अमेरिका स्थित संगठन, फ्रीडम हाउस ने 'फ्रीडम ऑन द नेट 2023: द रिप्रेसिव पावर ऑफ आर्टिफिशियल इंटेलिजेंस' शीर्षक से एक रिपोर्ट जारी की है, जिसमें बताया गया है कि वैश्विक इंटरनेट स्वतंत्रता में लगातार 13वें साल गिरावट आई है।

प्रमुख बिंदु:

• रिपोर्ट में यह भी बताया गया है कि 29 देशों में ऑनलाइन मानवाधिकारों के लिए माहौल ख़राब हुआ है।

• संगठन ने सेंसरशिप और दुष्प्रचार के प्रसार के लिए सरकारों द्वारा कृत्रिम बुद्धिमत्ता (एआई) के बढ़ते उपयोग पर भी लाल झंडा उठाया है।
