The GSC 2024, the International conference on soil science held by the Indian Society of Soil Science partnered with the International Union of Soil Sciences was recently concluded at New Delhi with the theme indicating the necessity of the sustainable utilization management of soil in coping with current environmental and economic crises. Through this event, organized and structured scientific, policy, environmental, and industry practitioners in soil science, food security, and climate change discussed various significant issues surrounding soil health. As the world becomes more threatened by environmental decline, the conference highlighted activities that could be taken for the sustenance of healthy soil ecosystems. Through GSC 2024, the committee is a reminder of the close relationship between soil and sustainable development, must be studied for UPSC and SSC exams 2024 news.
The theme of the conference, "Caring Soils Beyond Food Security: He brought attention to the “Climate Change Mitigation and Ecosystem Services” and noted the key position of the soil in the plan for a sustainable future. Soil degradation became an object of increasing concern for India, in which territory over one-third is threatened. Some of them include such instances like deforestation; these are the major areas that cause soil erosion and hence loss of soil fertility due to other factors like; urbanization and unsustainable practices like farming. One of the shocking numbers mentioned at the conference was that due to soil erosion the country annually loses 15.35 tonnes of soil per hectare. This loss has a severe effect on agricultural yield, hence a shortage of produce, especially in the rural areas.
In response, some farming techniques such as; organic farming, crop rotation, rainwater harvesting etc were recommended so also were other measures towards soil management like farming conservation and erosion control. The conference focused on requirements for the government policies and practical actions on the community level for improving the soil quality and for rehabilitation of the adverse affected areas.
Hence, it is statically connected with climate change and achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Live soils can also support carbon storage which means they can play their part in dealing with the challenges resulting from climate change. In addition, the rehabilitation of degraded land has potential to act as an effective tool for improving food security through better and diverse yields from what lies in the soil. They pointed to the lack of funding for soil science and sustainable land management to address the global climate challenges of the twenty-first century during the conference.
The Global Soil year Conference 2024 affirmed the need for international measures to safeguard the soil which is a basic input in food production and a factor of environmental balance. Through such an approach to display integrated solutions and policies the conference served as a catalyst for moving the global discourse on soil health forward. Especially for the contenders of various competitive examinations, it is imperative that they know about soil management, link between soil and agriculture and its soil management functions under climate change.
