India has achieved a significant technological landmark when it successfully test-flies its first long-range hypersonic missile that can fly over Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound, and has a range of more than 1,500 kilometers. India joins a very small club of countries which have weaponized hypersonic technology, with members including the United States, Russia, and China.
This missile, developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, was launched from Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. It is intended to carry all kinds of payloads for all three services of the Indian Armed Forces. In the test, it demonstrated very advanced terminal maneuvers and exceptional accuracy. Several range systems followed its trajectory to confirm that it does indeed hit with pinpoint accuracy on its target.
With hypersonic missiles characterized by their incredible speed and high maneuverability, which makes them almost impossible to detect and intercept, it is extremely difficult to target stationary or moving objects. This capability gives them a strategic upper hand in modern warfare. Now with this successful test, India has further consolidated its position among the leaders in cutting-edge military technology as well as its ability to deal with emerging security challenges.
Defence minister Rajnath Singh tweeted to congratulate DRDO and hail the test as a landmark achievement for India's indigenous defence sector. "This missile is going to significantly raise our deterrence capability, and fast track the vision of "Atmanirbhar Bharat" in Defence manufacturing.
This development also reveals India's focus on advancing strategic capabilities in view of growing geopolitical tension in the Indo-Pacific region. Of course, in addition to military applications, the hypersonic missile program underlines India's advancement in high-speed aerodynamics, material sciences, and propulsion systems.
Relevance for Exams: This achievement must be understood in the strategic terms wherein aspirants must grasp the technological complexities of hypersonic weapons and the importance DRDO has played in advancing the Defence capabilities of the country.
