As amended, the resolution restated the organization’s urging for an early attainment of a reasonable and permanent peace in the Middle East,the call being in adherence to UN resolutions. It underlined demands for Israel to withdrawal from territories it occupied in 1967 including East Jerusalem. The resolution also demanded Israel pull out of the territories occupied since 1967, including east al Quds Jerusalem. It was also devoted to pointing to the necessity of acknowledging the basic rights of the Palestinians and their right to statehood. 

India and its support for Palestine

  • India votes to favor the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution “Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine”. The resolution calls for the withdrawal of Israel from the Palestinian area occupied by them since 1967, including East Jerusalem. 

  • The resolution was introduced by Senegal and was supported by 157 countries but 8 countries voted against it while some of the countries abstained from voting.

  • India, Senegal, and many other countries voted to support the resolution but the eight countries voted against it including Israel, the USA, Argentina, etc while Cameroon, Ukraine, and some others abstained from voting.

  • India supports the two-nation theory to end the long-standing conflict between the two states and exist peacefully within their pre-1967 border and favors the establishment of Palestine as an independent state.

  • Apart from UN resolutions, India supported a separate resolution for the removal of Israel from the Syrian Golan Heights which has been occupied since 1967. It was supported by 97 countries in favor while 8 countries voted against it including Isreal, USA, and UK
