The 55th edition of the prestigious, International Film Festival of India IFFI was inaugurated on a colorful note in capital city of Goa, Panaji. The first ever held exercise was the event of its inauguration held at st Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor stadium presided by the Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Secretary Sanjay Jaju etc. This annual event has now become very important in Indians cultural calendar and is the epitome of worldly and Indian talent in the industry.
This year’s festival includes over 180 films from 81 different countries and is a showcase of global culture, story-telling, and filmmaking. It consists of 16 world premieres; 43 representing Asian Cinema; and 109 Indian movies which gives a chance to directors to screen their works to an interested audience.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to the notable Information Age Australian filmmaker Philip Noyce. The Australian filmmaker Jocelyn Moorhouse, famous for the Amazing Grace, and Chris Noonan did not work with Noyce but they benefited from his vision because his movies still define modern cinema all over the world.
The festival also honored the outstanding legends of the Indian moving pictures industry – the legendary playback singer Mohammed Rafi and the actor-director Raj Kapoor who left behind themselves immortal. Such were the special screening and exhibition dedicated to their works that received appreciation of attendees as a proof of a great work of pioneers of Indian film industry performed during the major event of Heart of Cinema.
IFFI has been particularly serving as a ground for international film makers to converge and interact for several years now. This is not only about premiere of films but also comprises of such sections as workshops, master classes, and meetings with the masters and producers. They want to attract youth talent and reinforce India as a nation for becoming world class cinematic centre.
The 55 th IFFI is relevant to the UPSC syllabus in the Art and Culture domain primarily as a concern of the government in giving a boost to the Indian cinema abroad. For SSC aspirants it would be noteworthy for the National Current Affairs Section, specifically focusing on cultural diplomacy and India’s contribution to world cinema.
Prospective civil servants should be informed of the festivals relevance as a pedestals for creativity, international cooperation and reiteration of India’s cinematic legacy on the global platform.
