On November 30 and December 1, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi graced the 59th All India Conference of Director Generals/Inspector Generals of Police at Bhubaneswar. In his speech, he was especially focused on the processes of increasing the modernity of the police and their usage of new techniques and technologies to counteract new threats. The Prime Minister also brought out the clever version of policing known as SMART policing to improve policing situation throughout the country.

SMART Policing: A New Vision for the Police

The Prime Minister expanded on the SMART policing concept, urging police to become:

  • Strategic: Planning for long-term solutions.

  • Meticulous: Focus on precision in operations.

  •  Adaptable: Ability to adjust to evolving challenges.

  • Reliable: Ensure trust and accountability.

  • Transparent: Foster openness in all dealings.

Use of AI and cyber crime

Use of AI to tackle online scams, digital frauds, cyber crime and it is specifically focused on the threat of Deep fakes.  Shri Narendra Modi encouraged the police to strengthen India’s double AI power

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): Strengthening technology to combat cyber threats.

  •  Aspirational India: Empowering citizens and institutions to address new-age security challenges.

PM urges Police to modernize and realign itself with the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’.

National Police Hackathon: PM suggested organizing a National Police Hackathon to encourage innovation and problem-solving within the police force

Homeage to the Iron Man of India: Recalling Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s contribution to the Ministry of Home Affairs, PM called on all levels of security establishment of honour his legacy during his 150th birth anniversary in 2025.

  • Left-wing extremism (LWE): Efforts to combat insurgencies and extremism in remote areas causing violence
